I just got word from BlackBerry-maker Research In Motion (RIM) that the company's much-anticipated Twitter for BlackBerry social-networking application will be publicly released today at 9 PM EST. The app is still in beta, and as such, it could still be packing a bug or two. But the release should put smiles on the faces of many Twitter-addicted BlackBerry users.
I've been using Twitter for BlackBerry for a number of weeks now, and I though it hasn't replaced TweetGenius as my BlackBerry Twitter app of choice, it's growing on me. Specifically, I like how the application integrates with native BlackBerry messages inbox, so you can quickly check tweets, replies and direct messages from that central location. The version released today will also include a few new "tweaks," according to the company. From RIM:
Notifications of New Tweets and @Replies/Mentions
Twitter Lists Functionality
Profile Editing
Personalization Settings
Enlarged Avatar (Profile Picture) Viewing
Improved in-Application Caching/Polling
The app also apparently lets you rapidly connect with someone on Twitter, by sending your Twitter handle over BBM or email. The reciept then needs only to click on it, and Twitter for BlackBerry will launch.
You can download Twitter for BlackBerry tonight from BlackBerry App World. And if you can't wait to get your own thumbs on the app, check out the in-depth visual walkthrough I posted when the beta was first released to early testers.
