BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) 5.0 SP2 Notes Detail New IT Policies for "BlackBerry 6"

Release notes for RIM's BES 5.0 SP2 offer a look at new IT control policies specifically for "BlackBerry 6" devices.

Earlier this month, I posted up some details on the next major upgrade for Research In Motion's (RIM) BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) 5.0: BES 5.0 Service Pack 2 (SP2). And back in April, I shared the first official video clip of RIM's upcoming mobile OS, BlackBerry 6, which is expected later this year.

Today, BES 5.0 SP2 is still unavailable for download, but RIM has posted some associated release notes on its site, which suggests the software's official debut can't be too far down the road. And those notes contain some interesting new information on IT policies that will be specific to devices running BlackBerry 6.

Here's a quick list of BlackBerry-6-specific IT policies in BES 5.0 SP2, from the software release notes:

BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) 5.0 SP2 IT Policies
BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) 5.0 SP2 IT Policies for BlackBerry 6

All of the above listed IT policies with the number "6.0" listed next to them will be effective only on BlackBerry 6 devices, i.e., administrators will be unable to enforce them on BlackBerry smartphones running earlier version of RIM's OS. Most of these new policies are meant to help organizations control the amounts of data their users consume, and in turn, help them reduce wireless service costs.

BES 5.0 SP2 is not yet available, and neither is BlackBerry 6. But we've already seen a couple of upcoming RIM handhelds that will run the new software, including the BlackBerry "Bold 9800" slider—which may or may not be officially called the "BlackBerry Torch"—and the BlackBerry 9670 clamshell. New rumors also suggest an upgraded version of the BlackBerry Bold 9700 with a touch screen will also sport BlackBerry 6.

In related news, RIM also recently updated BES 5.0 SP1 for both Microsoft Exchange and Lotus Domino.

And you can learn more about BES 5.0 SP2 by downloading RIM's release notes.

Hardware tokens were a popular method of strong authentication in past years but the cumbersome provisioning and distribution tasks, high support requirements and replacement costs have limited their growth. The additional log-in steps that hardware tokens require and the resulting user frustrations have limited adoption and make them impractical for larger scale partner and customer applications.
