DataViz, the company behind the Documents to Go mobile Office software suite, now shipping along with Research In Motion's (RIM) BlackBerry handheld operating system v.4.5 and higher, has upgraded both the standard (free) and premium (paid) editions of the product.
BlackBerry owners with devices running OS v4.5 or higher can download the upgrade to Documents to Go Standard Edition free of charge. As part of that upgrade, Docs to Go users will now have support for Microsoft Excel 2007/2008 files; they'll be able to track changes in Word files—though changes can only be viewed, not edited; and rows and tables can now be inserted into Excel files, among other modifications.
The Premium Edition of Documents to Go sells for $69.99 for a lifetime license or $49.99 per year, and it's available in English, French, Spanish, Italian and German. In addition to the standard edition upgrades, Docs to Go Premium users also get a variety of software enhancements, including a brand new PDF reader, appropriately called PDF to Go, which enables them to view native PDF files on their BlackBerry devices. (Previous versions of Docs to Go allowed for only Office/Excel/PowerPoint viewing and editing.)
Premium users can now insert comments into Word documents; insert and edit comments in Excel spreadsheets; and the upgraded software supports password-protected Word and Excel 1997-2004 files, according to DataViz.
However, before purchasing the full version of Docs to Go, it's wise to determine whether or not the free standard version meets your specific needs—especially since there are "tricks" to create new Word, Excel and PowerPoint files using only Docs to Go Standard Edition.
BlackBerry owners running handheld OS v4.5 or higher can download the Docs to Go upgrade to v1.005.030 over-the-air--though only one free download is allowed; a fee of $2.99 will be charge for additional downloads. A 30-day free trial of the premium software is also available. Interested parties can learn more about both Docs to Go Standard and Premium editions on DataViz's website.
DataViz makes Documents to Go for a variety of mobile devices, including Windows Mobile (both Standard and Professional), Palm and Symbian devices (S60 and UIQ). And just last week, the company announced its intent to bring the software to Apple's popular iPhone, as well.
