PrimeTime2Go for BlackBerry: TV Shows Coming Soon to Your RIM Smartphone

to Mobile/Wireless |

UPDATE: I just spoke with the PrimeTime2Go folks at RIM's CTIA booth, and the app is expected to become available from BlackBerry App World some time in May.

Research In Motion on Wednesday took the wraps off its much anticipated BlackBerry App World mobile software store, but that’s not all the company’s co-CEO announced in his CTIA Wireless keynote address: BlackBerry users will also soon be able to download and view TV shows from networks like NBC, CBS and MTV, thanks to a new app called PrimeTime2Go.

PrimeTime2Go, from Quickplay Media, isn’t available yet, and neither RIM nor Quickplay has spilled any specifics on release dates. But it will be distributed through BlackBerry App World.

PrimeTime2Go subscribers will pay $7.99 a month for access to the service, which will use Wi-Fi connections to transfer content to BlackBerry devices, according to Reuters.

Because Wi-Fi is a necessary ingredient in the PrimeTime2Go recipe, the service will only be initially available on two BlackBerry devices: the BlackBerry Bold 9000 on AT&T; and the T-Mobile BlackBerry Curve 8900. That arrangement leaves BlackBerry Storm users out in the cold, since that device lacks Wi-Fi. The Storm currently has the largest display of any BlackBerry, so ironically, it’s the best suited for viewing video content.

Currently, BlackBerry smartphone owners need to either convert video files into BlackBerry-friendly formats for mobile viewing--which can be complex and time-consuming for less tech-savvy users. Or they can download content from sites like Videos4BB.info. PrimeTime2Go will be the first official, RIM-sanctioned BlackBerry video distribution channel.

RIM’s biggest competitor in the mobile software space, Apple, charges a per-episode fee for video content in its iTunes App Store so you could potentially get more bang for your buck via PrimeTime2Go.

Hardware tokens were a popular method of strong authentication in past years but the cumbersome provisioning and distribution tasks, high support requirements and replacement costs have limited their growth. The additional log-in steps that hardware tokens require and the resulting user frustrations have limited adoption and make them impractical for larger scale partner and customer applications.
