RIM Touch Screen BlackBerry Storm to Make Appearance at BlackBerry Developer Conference

to Technology Topics |

BlackBerry fans anxious for some thumbs-on time with the new touch screen BlackBerry Storm 9530 from Verizon Wireless had better start making travel arrangements for next week; RIM's inaugural BlackBerry Developer Conference, which is being held in Santa Clara, Calif., on October 20 through 22, will reportedly be one of the first venues for users to get their mitts on the much anticipated Storm.

Can't make it to Santa Clara? No worries. Just bookmark this blog. I'll be one of the first folks in line to demo the touch screen BlackBerry—you can count on it—and I'll blog my initial impressions and more right here, on the Mobile WorkHorse page.

RIM unveiled the BlackBerry Bold 9000 at its last major event in May, the Wireless Enterprise Symposium (WES) 2008, and I was there with bells on. Just last month at CTIA, the company announced the BlackBerry Pearl 8220 Flip, and yours truly was one of the first to RIM's booth on opening day. I plan to keep this tradition alive, and you can expect my take on the Storm by next Monday, at the latest—I'm still hoping to finagle some time with the device on Sunday, before the event starts. (Fingers are crossed.)

If you're a BlackBerry developer, and the potential for a hands-on with the new Storm isn't motivation enough to ship out to Santa Clara, the BlackBerry Cool 15 ought to be. The BlackBerry Cool 15 is an event being organized by BlackBerryCool.com and the BlackBerry Partners Fund, in which 15 developers will have the opportunity to tout their best applications and win prizes—in addition to exposure...and the opportunity to hang out with Doug from BlackBerryCool.com, Kevin from CrackBerry.com and myself. We'll all be judging the event along with Rick Segal from the BlackBerry Partners Fund and (possibly) Pinstack.com's Hayden James. (Read my post from earlier this week for more details on the BlackBerry Cool 15.)

Storm, here I come! And I'm bringing my shammy...

Hardware tokens were a popular method of strong authentication in past years but the cumbersome provisioning and distribution tasks, high support requirements and replacement costs have limited their growth. The additional log-in steps that hardware tokens require and the resulting user frustrations have limited adoption and make them impractical for larger scale partner and customer applications.
