Viigo to Unveil New BlackBerry Biz Features, Streaming Audio at RIM’s WES 2009

to Mobile/Wireless |

It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of Viigo and its BlackBerry application; I’ve written about the “lifestyle app” countless time in this blog and on CIO.com. That’s because I believe Viigo is the most functional BlackBerry RSS reader on the market--its collection of other valuable features is really just icing on the cake for me. On Tuesday May 5, the Viigo folks are stepping it up another notch with the addition of multiple new enterprise-oriented features, as well as Facebook and Twitter functionality and streaming audio.

Viigo’s CEO Mark Ruddock and CTO Jay Steele will be on hand at RIM’s Wireless Enterprise Symposium (WES) in early May, where they will announce and demonstrate the new Viigo functionality and hold an attendee question-and-answer session.

Viigo currently offers both enterprise and “consumer” versions of its application. The upcoming business features will include enhanced corporate contacts functionality and new budgeting and finance utilities, along with company calendar, training and performance reporting tools. The free version of Viigo will get new Twitter and Facebook features, as well as the ability to stream audio, though it’s unclear where such audio will come from at this point.

I spent some time with pre-release versions of Viigo that had both Twitter and podcast support, but the features were far from perfect. I’m anxious to see how the company put on its finishing touches.

Viigo also works on a number of Microsoft Windows Mobile devices, though it’s unclear whether or not the new features will be available for all versions of Viigo or just the BlackBerry edition.

WES 2009 marks the one-year anniversary of the last major Viigo overhaul, which was dubbed Project Tango. I was in Orlando for WES last year and the Project Tango festivities, and I’ll return for the show next month, as well. Expect a full review of the new Viigo features right here on the Mobile WorkHorse blog. Until then, you can pick up a copy of Viigo on the company’s site.

Hardware tokens were a popular method of strong authentication in past years but the cumbersome provisioning and distribution tasks, high support requirements and replacement costs have limited their growth. The additional log-in steps that hardware tokens require and the resulting user frustrations have limited adoption and make them impractical for larger scale partner and customer applications.
