The Windows operating system had been sitting pretty with a 90 percent or more market share for ... well ... forever. Then November and December 2008 came along.

Unfortunately, layoffs are on nearly everyone's mind as we limp to the 2008 finish line and prep for an even more precarious 2009. Even Microsoft is not immune to layoff talk. Not anymore.

Pardon me if I'm a little bah humbuggy, but I had a rough week last week. I came home after a long day to find that my condominium had been broken into and my personal laptop and a few other items had been stolen.

I remember glancing at an issue of BusinessWeek last spring and the cover story was "The Mac in the Gray Flannel Suit." I thought the idea of Macs infiltrating the corporate world was premature.

Part of me wants Microsoft to make more consumer products for young people and invest more money in colorful and creative marketing campaigns. You know, be more like Apple.

News that Windows 7 beta 1 will be available on or around Jan. 13 got me thinking about the new look and feel of the OS and Microsoft's deliberate effort to have a cooler-looking interface.
