When the iPhone App Store went live last week, I was immediately struck by the impact it will have on the design of enterprise applications. The iPhone is just one of a new breed of form factors for accessing SaaS and enterprise RIA applications. No longer is there the luxury of guaranteed screen real-estate, type of input device or processor speed.
Diverse form factors mandate particular strategies for the design of Rich Internet Applications (RIAs) and Software as a Service (SaaS). Here are a few key points (more complete descriptions on the SaaS and RIA blog.)
These are just a few points that immediately jumped out at me when looking through the App Store. What is clear, is that any enterprise developing a new web application or SaaS solution, must have a strategy to accommodate a wide range of dispersed users using a diverse range of devices.
I can see the enterprise benefiting tremendously from the new IPhone app store. This seems like a perfect platform to deploy enterprise applications to business users. Although, most of the current applications are games and entertainment related, I am sure we will start seeing many productivity type of applications. In the enterprise, I am sure that IT managers will start creating different type of portals or interfaces into their intranets. I can see this going like the "extranet" was suppose to be...
