In the battle to get enterprise customers to switch to Gmail and the Google Apps software suite, Google has to meet higher expectations than existing business software vendors. While that might be unfair, it's their cross to bear for being such a powerhouse on the consumer Web and for all the high-profile media coverage the company receives.

As Google turned 10 this week, and the release of its Chrome web-browser gained generally favorable reviews, some began begging the question: has google spread itself too thin? Should a company that has made search and advertising its bread and butter product really be trying so hard compete with the likes of IBM and Microsoft in the enterprise computing space?

Microsoft announced that it is working on a lightweight version of its Office productivity software called "Albany," serving as an alternative to the rise of Google Apps, Zoho, and other web-based applications in the consumer space. While this is a good start in Microsoft admitting that software as a service (SaaS) will be the future of computing, they should consider making the service free of charge and fully Web-based. Tom Austin, a Gartner analyst, told attendees of the Gartner symposium today that Google doesn't care about the enterprise, but that doesn't mean the internet giant won't play a key role in serving up applications "in the cloud" to corporations during the next few years, causing further disruptions to Microsoft and IBM's business models.
