"Will I still have a job tomorrow?"
With the U.S. economy in a far-reaching recession and companies announcing layoffs seemingly every day, that question looms large in every working person's mind.
Obviously, some employees are at greater risk of losing their jobs than others. What's not so clear is how to calculate that risk. So for the past several months, I've wanted to come up with some kind of risk assessment that would help IT professionals (really, any professional) get an objective handle on their odds of getting laid off.

What won't you do to get a job? A few years ago, a friend who's an actress told me about the chance she had to play the lead female role in a popular movie from the 1970s. We were in Los Angeles, and she was giving me a tour of the city. To get the part, my friend told me that she had to have sex with the high-profile director.

The New York Times has a story today about a trend that's gaining steam: companies that are finding ways to cut their labor costs without laying off staff. Instead of handing out pink slips, some organizations are moving to four-day work weeks, instituting unpaid vacation time and getting rid of overtime.
