BlackBerry-toting travelers take heed: The popular (free) Truphone mobile voice-over-IP (VoIP) application for Nokia and iPhone devices is now available for Research In Motion (RIM) smartphones, in beta form. Thanks to some "clever mobile VoIP trickery," Truphone users can place international calls from their home countries to 33 major cities across the globe for as little as six cents a minute.

Research In Motion and its BlackBerry own the corporate smartphone space in the United States. In fact, a recent survey suggests that RIM has nearly three-quarters of U.S. enterprise users.

The world's first smartphone that translates photographs of written text into audio and then "speaks" the words aloud to users is expected to become available in early 2008.

Palm, the U.S. handset maker known for its PDAs and Treo smartphones, has been struggling for sometime to regain its status as a leader in the business phone space, but recent developments, including massive financial losses, layoffs and a failed product launch, suggest the company may finally be on its way out.
