There's been lots of talk about Microsoft-Yahoo vs Google in the search market. Yawn. I'm more interested in the implications for mashups and internet apps. If Google Gears gets out of beta and works as advertised, then why do consumers need to buy desktop applications? They’ll have internet apps that can go offline. And worse if consumers rapidly adopt this for personal use, it is only a short step into adopting the technology for business applications. Hmm, would Generation Y use MS Office or Google apps to mashup business info from corporate systems? Microsoft has to try something, hence the Yahoo bid. I'm thinking that Microsoft is betting its Popfly mashup creator will be more user friendly than Yahoo Pipes. After all, Microsoft does know something about making software tools. If Microsoft can use Yahoo consumer traffic to drive eyeballs to Popfly, they might have a shot at getting people excited about Yahoo-branded internet apps. If that happens it is only a short step to protecting Office. Enter stage left with Google lawsuit, not to protect Internet openness or its search/advertising market lead, but to protect its MS Office killing strategy.
There is something to be said about Microsoft tools indeed. They have mastered it. I've now managed both .Net and Java large developments and I can attest that building highly interactive RIA applications in Java is a nightmare. On last count there were 12 different layers of technology loosely coupled that had to come together one way or another to build my product... And very few people master all or even a great subset. I honestly forecast that building the same product with MS would have reduced Time to Market by 50%.
So I think MS is definitely unto something with the Yahoo bid.
Still it is not clear to me that strategically this is a right move for Microsoft or not; time will tell. In any case for the first time Microsoft is going to borrow if the bid is successful.
As a technology roadmap, I think, Microsoft Live WorkSpace will be competing against Google’s Docs. Strategically Yahoo purchase can improve the Microsoft reach in the online market as an online services provider. More than this I believe Microsoft is mainly looking to increase the share in the online advertising market and that’s where getting Yahoo can help Microsoft significantly to aggressively compete with Google.
No matter what after long time Yahoo share holders can really say "YA....HOO........."!
