Data Loss Prevention (DLP) solutions have grown up considerably over the past few years. Initially they were good at identifying simple data concepts such as social security numbers and credit card numbers or known structured data. But over time it has become apparent that this capability is only good for small or highly structured organizations. A majority of organizations do not know what data needs to be protected, or are unsure where their sensitive data resides. Thus, legacy DLP is not an effective solution for many organizations that must learn what they need to protect.
Fortunately, next-generation DLP solutions have “gone to school” and now have learning capabilities that give organizations the ability to identify data that needs to be protected and better understand the underlying business processes around the data. For example, data queries can be conducted for information associated with a specific project to identify the type of data, users of the data, and where the data was sent. With this knowledge, organizations can quickly understand what needs to be protected so that appropriate controls can be applied to prevent the loss of the data.
The potential of DLP solutions has been talked about for years. Now that DLP has grown up and gained the ability to learn, its potential is finally being realized.
