Walking the walk
Do you know what your direct reports are doing and what problems they face?

You're the CIO. The buck stops with you when it comes to development, technical support, QA and IT strategy. You've got a lot of people with different skills performing various roles within the organization.
Do you know what your staff are doing? How they do their work? What sorts of issues they face?
One sure way to get this valuable information is to spend a small amount of time actually performing these roles - that way you'll quickly understand how the IT organization is functioning or malfunctioning. So try to:
- Take a support call or two and follow the same processes you expect the support team to follow.
- Perform a basic development task. It'll do you good to shake off those cobwebs and get your oar back into the water.
- Test some new product functionality or bug fix.
- Find the information you're looking for on the company intranet or wiki instead of asking someone else who knows.
If you get into the habit of doing these things from time to time you'll really understand your IT business.
