In the spirit of Thomas Wailgum's recent post, "What a CIO Says, and What He's Really Thinking", here's some CEO deciphering.
When the CEO says, "We need to get more efficient."
What you hear: What technologies and business processes can we introduce to improve our current practices?
What she's really saying: "Our staff overheads are too high - you need to cut back."
When the CEO says, "You delivered the project on time and on budget - well done."
What you hear: That was really tight. I made it - finally some recognition.
What she's really saying: "Next time you'll get less time and less budget."
When the CEO says, "The board and I are behind you one-hundred percent."
What you hear: It's great to have their backing and support.
What she's really saying: "Look out!"
When the CEO says, "I'd like to organize a 360 degree feedback session with you."
What you hear: Here's a chance to improve the way we communicate.
What she's really saying: "What does everyone think of me?"
When the CEO says, "Getting IT right is critical to the success of this organization."
What you hear: Show time - this is my hour.
What she's really saying: "I have no idea what IT is and what you actually do."
When the CEO says, "We need to talk."
What you hear: What's the job market like right now?
What she's really saying: "We need to talk."
