As the dialogue about energy efficiency in the enterprise increases, so does IT’s awareness of its own carbon footprint. That’s one of the reasons behind the increasing commitment from technology manufacturers and vendors to greening their products and operations. Just as the Green Grid came up with benchmarks to improve data center operations a few months ago, the newly created Climate Savers Computing Initiative aims to provide similar standards for PCs and servers.
Regardless of how green your IT organization is (find out by taking CIO’s Green IT poll) the message from some of the largest technology companies, including Intel, Google, HP, Microsoft and many others, is that corporations need to do more. That’s why they have joined forces and set targets for energy efficient computers and power management tools. By 2010, the standards proposed by the Climate Savers Computing Initiative could save 62 billion kilowatt hours of energy, which represents billions in energy costs. One of the requirements that will help the organization reach that goal is the expectation that PC power supplies reach a minimum of 90 percent energy efficiency by 2010.
In addition to requiring that manufacturers build products that meet Climate Savers’ standards, which are closely related to the EPA’s Energy Star Guidelines, the initiative encourages the use of the power management tools already built into PCs. Such power-saving capabilities are already built into most computers, although they are underutilized by most organizations.
this is very much true, all big companies are now turning green or rather becoming more environmental friendly. The laptop getting produced nowadays dont use components that are unsafe/harm the environment. To turn IT green, not just the infrastructure but the process needs to be streamlined. Use of reusable components, using energy efficient products , cutting down on waste generated , saving water & electricity are some things the companies can look into. Even if there is a need of water for cooling the plants , instead of generating from ground they can implement rain water harvesting for storing water that can be used to cool the plants. I think google also developed the webpage with black background(black-google) that could save 750MW-Year of power consumed. All these intiatives are good to conserve power but the real truth is its upto every human in this planet earth to think about it and do things the rite way !
Has anyone been able to find a good site that has actual information on solutions and products to green your IT department?? There seems to be a lot of talk about the strategy and importance, but not a lot about steps to take. The only site that I found was this one: www.softchoice.com/ecotech. It also has a pretty good newsletter that you can sign up for.
Re: efficient computing, there is a great competition "Power Down for the Planet" that asks people to develop fun, entertaining, or educational videos about how sustainable computing benefits the environment. I think you can win money, bikes, and computers.
