The improvements (or changes) in Communication mechanism, medium and expectations in Entreprises are notable in the last few years.

• Pagers were replaced by Blackberries
• Stand alone chat applications and servers were replaced with technologies that better gelled with existing comminication medium
• Exploitation of the VOIP

Present

The underlying objective was to unify the communication mechanism and medium. Chat software were replaced by Microsoft Communicator integrated with AD Services and Exchange server.

Products like IBM Lotus Sametime Unified Telephony software integrates telephony across multivendor Public Branch Exchange (PBX) systems including integrated softphones; phone and IM presence awareness; and call management and call control across multiple communications systems.

Even Jabber based softwares have transformed themselves from Person-Person communication to a Extensible, Programmable communication Platform. A good example of its bridging capability is linking Jabber chat to a web meeting (or conferencing, video conferencing) tool like Webex.

Possible Future

We now not only (can) have High Availabily Software Systems but also always available Human Resources too. All possible because of the Extreme Mobilit solutions, Wireless technologies and satellite services.

But what if I my blackberry dies or mobile runs out of charge.

• Can someone communicate with me on my Car's satellite radio ?
• Will my manager be able to ping me on my TV screen ?
• Will someone be able to track by global positioning transmitter and leave an emergency message with the next gas station, ATM or wending machine I stop on the way ?

I don't doubt it. Do you ?
